What is it?
Better Unmount is a program that improves the way the Finder puts away disks. Unmount is a propeller-head term for dragging a disk to the trash or selecting "Put Away" from the Finder's File menu. Normally when a disk is dragged to the trash, the Finder will ask you if you really want to remove the disk from the desktop. 99% of the time, this is exactly what the user wanted to do, but they are slowed down by the question. Better Unmount prevents the Finder from asking if you really want to remove a disk.
Sometimes it is not possible to put a disk away because it "contains items that are in use". This usually means that a document or application that is stored on that disk is still open. When many applications are running at the same time, it may not be clear what to do to fix the problem. When trying to put away a disk that contains open items, Better Unmount provides a list of the items that are currently open.
Will it slow down my computer?
Better Unmount uses about 2K of memory when it is installed and makes two (very small) patches to the Finder. No other application on the system is affected and the patches will not noticeably slow the Finder down.
What's wrong with it?
My bug list is very short (probably due to lack of testing! :-)
• It does not check for the Minimum system configuration (System 7.x or later, please)
• There is no command-key for the "Display Items…" button, there really should be.
